Tsunami’s and conflict – Sri Lanka & Indonesia

A very interesting short article on the impact of the tsunami in Sri Lanka and Indonesia – The Silver Lining | Impacts of Disasters on Conflict Areas.

Both Sri Lanka and Indonesia demonstrated that the immediate impact of a disaster has a tremendous uniting force, but that the challenge is to maintain unity beyond the emergency relief period. Sri Lanka proved that the initial impulse towards cooperation is not enough to sustain larger reconciliation without the careful engagement of international actors and, crucially, a fundamental will to make peace on both sides.

The lesson to be drawn from these experiences is that, while disasters may provide new potential for reconciliation, realizing that potential is still dependent on the manner in which the response is executed and, crucially, on the will of the parties to seize the opportunity for peace.
